On 8th April 1994, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX), Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn made a royal visit to officially open the bridge for public use. Following the ceremony, they stayed overnight at the former Maha Chivit Palace before returning to Thailand.
The Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (Mukdahan-Savannakhet) is located on Chayangkun Road (Highway No. 212) in Ban Song Pueai, Tambon Bang Sai Yai, about seven kilometres north of Amphoe Mueang Mukdahan. It forms part of the East-West Economic Corridor, which runs from Myanmar through Thailand and Laos to Vietnam.
Construction began in January 2003, and the bridge officially opened on 20 December 2006. The two-lane structure is 1,600 metres long and 12 metres wide, crossing the Mekong River to Ban Nakae in Muang Kaysone Phomvihane, around five kilometres north of Savannakhet Province in Laos.
