Famous Festival of Laos
Boun Pha Wet
It is a religious festival held on different dates across villages in the first month of the year. It commemorates Lord Buddha, believed by Lao people to be Prince Vessantara, known for giving away all he owned.
Boun Ma Kha Bu Saar
The festival, also known as Magha Puja or Sangha Day, is the second most important Buddhist festival in Laos. It commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 Buddhists to honour the Buddha and is observed through oil lamp lighting, temple visits, chanting, and meditation.
Boun Khoun Khao
The Rice Festival honours agriculture in Laos and is held in villages throughout the month. It celebrates the rice harvest, with a village elder tying white cotton strings around people’s wrists and offering prayers for happiness.
Boun Bang Fai
The Rocket Festival dates back to pre-Buddhist times and is one of the most lively festivals in Laos. It takes place in villages across the country at different times between May and September.
Boun Khao Phansa
Marks the start of Buddhist Lent, beginning after the full moon of the eighth lunar month, usually in July. It is a 3-month rainy season retreat in Laos during which weddings and non-religious celebrations pause, and monks remain in their temples for study and meditation.
